ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION. ■ ' (BT TELKGRAPn. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT). ' Masterton, Juno 17. The annual meeting of tlio Wairarapa School Committees Association was hold here to-day. There was a small attendance of members, presided over by Mr. Packard Brown. In its annual report tho Association stated that tho frequent and unnecessary changes' in school books have bcou felt to bo a heavy tax on parents, and tho Government had been urged to provide uniform school books for all schools, to bo sold at cost to parents. Inspectors ana teachers appeared to oppose this desirablo reform, but tho Association had reason to beliovo that tho matter would be dealt with by Government. The Association had tried to got one or- more septic tanks made at country schools by way of experiment, but bo far without success. Some improvement in tho sanitary arrangements of country schools had been promised. Committees would shortly bo called upon to nominate candidates for tho Education Board. Mr. 11. Brown, chairman of the Association _ since its inception, will offer his services if 'assured of, a reasonable measure of support. The committee regretted to notice a lack of interest in the Association. Correspondent was received from the Health Department to the effect that septic tanks wero unsuitable for.Mauriceville West and Taureru Schools; from Education Board' stating that it could not see its way afs present to direct tho abolition of slates in public schools, where desired scholars might be allowed writing pads in place -of -slates, but before this could be done in any particular: I instance the teacher would bo required to obtain the consent of the parents. It was resolved that tho Education Board be asked to give at least one month's notice to committees of the date on which nomina-; tions for Education Board elections close; that the Health Department be asked to instal a septic tank at Fernridge _ j School; that various committees be circularised with a' view >to holding an_ educational conference; and that'tho Association recommend thb committees to support the candidature of Mr. R. Brown as their representative on the Education Board at, the forthcoming election. Tho election of 'officers 'resulted as follows —President, Mr. R. Brown; vice-presidents,' Messrs. Jesson and C. C. Jackson; treasurer, Mr. C. J. Rose; committee, Messrs, J. Hare, E. Harper, F. Court, A. Percy, 0. Isaacson, J. Welch, E. Payton, and G. Garrett. A large number of schools in South Wairarapa and Carterton districts were not represented.
