EMPLOYMENT OF PRISONERS.

MARKET GARDENERS' (PROTEST. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.') Christohuroh, Juno 17. At tho mooting of tho North Canterbury District Farmers' Union Executivo to-day, a letter was read from tho Auckland Market Gardonors' Association, asking tho Union to co-operate with tho Association in making a protest against the proposal of tho Government to employ prison labour in market gardering in competition with market gardonors now in business. The Executive was sympathetic to tho extent that they considered that tho market gardeners should not bo subjected to unfair competition in tho open market, but they were extremely unwilling to interfere with the employment of prisoners in-an occupation which should bo beneficial to them in many ways. The letter was formally received, and no action taken.
