NOTES AND COMMENTS. • ' - ? v- [Bt Glencoe.] . , ~ Whakawehi was the only withdrawal from tho Hack Hurdles. The field of teii'wera dispatched in a heavy shower ,of rain',', and horses and riders all finished more. or less besmattered with mud. Noteorini took the •lead in the oarly stages, hut when--a-'mile. was covered ho dropped back, and finished out of a place. Top Rose lost his, f pder at the hurdle, entering tho straight for tho first time. He was in a good position when he'hit the hurdle.' and was going '"along nicely. .O'Brien' liung on to-the holme's neck for a few seconds, but was unabje v to get back to the saddle. Whatakura, jumped beautifully, and had too much place for 'anything in tho raco. Defeat and Ruabon'-both shaped well, but. had no chance with Whatakura. The top-weight. Letherin was jumping rather wildly, and will evidently,'.require a little more racing before ho geta on tho winning list. ' • •- tj Ahei, Waikaralca, and Waipunehu ■ were withdrawn from the Winter Hack, for which Comedian and San Jose ruled as favourites'.The barrier, was released with the horses in line, but San Joso was slow to move, and Comedian got smartly out of .the tapes; San Joso cauglit the Merriweo gelding at tho half milo post, but tho latter was fullof running when the straight -was reached, whereas San Jose commenced to tiro badly! Illustrious was lying .handy all the way, and ran a good second. Motukawa, ridden by T. Pritchard, seemed to enjoy the distance and the heavy going, and put in a. nice finish' oil the 'last hundred yards.. My Darling hung oil from tho rails tho wholo way,' and lost a lot of ground.

The Ladies' Bracelet provided rather a pretty race. Tho whole of the twelve acceptors went to the post. Highden, Hinupai, Commander, mid. Roseal were racing in' front over tho first mile,-with Polyanthus handy. When the straight was ; reached Roseal had. tailed off,, and Highden commenced to tiro. There was prospect of a good finish between Commander and Hiriunai, .but inside the "distance Aliei, ridden' by Mr. Beatson, came from the Tuck, and won cleverly.

..For the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase Faro was installed a good favourite, with Nadador, Loch Fyne and Pierre next in demand. Post Haste and Valima were the outsiders of the liolil. Wlictevor cluntce Faro hud, ho spoilt by . running off'at the" manuka fonce in ■ the -second round. This is the first time he has ever been- known, to .refuso a jump.' Loch Fvne ran very. badly, and at the end of. two miles ho was . hopelessly out .of it... Miss King and Pushful came, to grief during the race, and Pierre, who appeared, to havo a good chanco. ran off at the double in front of the stanc). Test-Haste was ridden with great judgment by .Graylands. The" Sou'wester gelding was in a handy position after going two niiios, and - as soon as Nadador had pot ahead of ' Valima, Graylands sent Post 'Haste along, and quickly passing Valima, he caught Nadador about a quarter of a milo from homo, and had tho race won thenco omvird. Nadador jumped splendidly throughout, but lacked the nccessary pace. Valima, though a nice little mare, looked short' of work, and was apparently not ready. However, when she got to tho front' C. O'Neill rode her with (treat patienco, and, after jumping rather wildly at the first few fences, she settled ■ down and flew tho remaining obstacles in grand slyle. She was hot forward enough to see the. •full journey out, and it.was only by excellent horseman-' ship on the part of her rider that she lasted so long. He nursed his mount nicely, and .she covered less ground than anything in the race. The Vanguard mare is owned by Mr. J. O'Neill,' of Wellington, and she should nrove equal to i-winning a steeplechase before tho end of-tho winter. Formidable, Hutiwai,' arid " Pronun were withdrawn from tho Scurry,' for which Cali- ! fornia was made a better favourite than Miss Advance.! California was in. the ruck till well into tho straight; but ! onco ho was'set going ho easily accounted for the opposition.. Ho is a fine big coit, and should develop into a speedy racer. It is said that his owner has already refused a four-figure offer to part with him. Muritai, tho .half-sister to St. Joe and Apa, was very , fractious at the post, and was eventually left.' Utopia finished close behind tho placed horses, and is evidently on tho improve.- Mistime ran much better than she did at. Otaki, but onco California ranged alongside her she had no chance of shaking him off. All tho acceptors started in the-Hawke's Bav Hurdles. Monarque and Prospector came down at the third hurdle, and tho riders wore badly shaken! but- neither, sustained serious injury. Lull was the, best backed of tho field, arid tho confidence reposed in him was not misplaced. Lind -always had, him in a nice position, and ho -won comfortably. Old Repulse was k meritorious second,- and managed to stay the distance wonderfully well. , .' The last race of the day was marred by a poor start, but it resulted in a most- ex-, citing finish. Mystification had tho 'sen-ices of Fred Davis, and it was a- rare treat to see that experienced horseman bring his mount along over the last half of tho straight. 'When'first sighted his task looked hopeless, but ho got up in time to win by half a length. Mussel_ van well for seven furlongs, and Narcotic, Millennial, and Rondrock battled tho journey -out very well, but White Lie, Ballyncoty, and Goldiield' wero left too far to' havo any chance. Mr. A. F. Douglas, or,-nor of Waipu, will leavo Wollington. for Sydney, on Friday, en' route for Melbourne to seo- his horse compete in tho Grand -National. Jno. O'Connell, who is to ride tho Torpedo gelding, ltaves by tho samo boat. Mr. J. Gellior, owner of Whatakura, has had quite an experience with tho horss. Ho purchased tho son of Let-ho at Blenheim .last month, and won a race tho same day with him, but owing', to some irregularity the horse was disqualified. The next timo of starting, tho horse finished second to Mount Cook, but as the latter failed to draw the weight Whatakura was, awarded tho race. Next day lie fell, but at Hastings to-day he was again in winning form,' so that his owner has been fully compensated for tho ill-luck which at first attended his purchase. • • - '
