LICENSING BENCH. The Licensing Bench hold its meeting at tho Lower Hutfc yesterday at 2 p.m. The following . wore present: Dr. M'Arthur, (in tho ' chair), Messrs. Orton Stevens, Jno. Cudby, H. llider, J. Cotton, and W. Inglis. Inspector Ellison appeared on behalf of the police. _ The application for renewal by Jno. Young, licenseo of the Family Hotel, was granted. Tho police roported that tho water-pipes had been connected. Sir. T. M. Wilford appeared for W. R. Wilson, licensee of the Central Hotol, who applied for renewal, and said that to shorten 1 the case he would not deny the statcmont of ; the polico with regard to repairs to the promises. Tho position was caused by a dis--1 pute between the owner, licensee, and Messrs. Staples and, C 0.,. brewers, as to who wero 1 liable for tho cost. He said that during the 1 interval between the application and the pre--1 sent tho sum of £100 had been put into Mr. ' Cracroft Wilson's hands, to be used for repairs when it was decided who should pay. He had soveral voluntary witnesses present. The Inspector of Police roported that tho . premises were now in a satisfactory condi- • tion. , ' The Chairman said that tho next ques- , tion to consider was the licensee's repeated ' absence from tho promises. I ' Mr. Wilford called W. R. Wilson, the ap- ■ plieant, who explained that ho had been ao--1 sent 28 days in seven months. : 'l'ho Chairman said thtit tho bench did not i desiro to delay tho license being granted, but impressed very strongly on the licensee [ tho necessity for more dose attention to tho , conduct 'of tho ' house. The license would be granted. Iu connection with tho license of the Victoria Hotdl (J. Sullivan), Mr. T. M. Wilford appeared for the applicant. Inspector Ellison said that a number of complaints had : been lodged against this house, on account of cases of rowdyism and drunkenness on tho premises. Mr. Wilford gave an account of an opisodo which occurred at tho hotel, and which was beyond the, control of the. licensee. Ho did net consider that the house should bo blamed for an occurrence which was beyond prevention by .tho landlord. After consideration the Chairman spoko to tho licenseo and impressed upon him tho necessity for lirmncss iu dealing with tho rough class of trade at times proscnt in Pctono. Ho should report any disturbance to tho polico. Tho liconse was granted. The Finance' Comniitteo of tho' Pctono Borough Council mot last evening when tho estimates for the current year wero considered. They will, como up for confirmation at next Monday's meeting of tho Council. Tho weather interfered somewhat with tho attendance at tho organ recital at St. Davidjs Church, l'otoiic, last night.
