THE KRITAIN-MANAWATU MATCH. CHARGES FOR THE A. AND P. GROUND, LEVY OF TWENTY PER CENT. AGREED UPON. (BY TKLEGKAriI.—SPECIAL CORItESrOOTIENT.) Palmerston North, June 16. A deputation from tlio Manawatu Rugby Union waited upon tlio A. and P. committee to-day, and asked for a reduction in the charge (33 1-3 per cont.) for the uso of tho grounds for tho British match. It was thought by tlio Union that the A. and P. Association would bo prepared to meet them in overy respect, as the match would bo a great attraction to tho district. The Union did not expect to get tho same terms, viz., £30, as it got for tho Australian tour. Mr. Pirani pointed out that thero existed an agreement between tho Union and 'the Association that tho charge shall bo 25 per cent, for affiliated Unions for small matches, but it would bo absurd to ask such a percentage when the takings are four or fivo hundred pounds. The committeo had also been told that tho New Zealand Rugby Union was to reap the whole benefit, which was incorrect. It was also pointed out that thero were Unions in various parts which were offering tlio us,e of tho grounds frea. Mr. Pirani further suggested that a lump sum be charged." It did not tend to fclio popularity of the Association to havo tlio information that oxcessivo charges wore being made telegraphed all over the colony. Mr. Muller, secretary of the Union, pointed out that if a satisfactory arrangement could not be arrived at the match must be played at Fcildms. . • In discussing tho matter tho delogatesi stated that the charge had been fixed at Is. and 2s. for tho largo staw}. Mr. M'Hardy said the ground committee had it in their mind that 2s. was going to be charged, and, acting on that, tliey enforced tlio 33 1-3 per cent. Had the.v known tlio charge would be Is., they would never havo asked for such a high figure.
: Mr. Wood, M.P., moved that the Union bo offered the use of the grounds for £50. Mr.. J. 0. Batchelor' moved that a percentage bo taken, say 25 per cent. Mr. H. Booth' said that thoy were thoro to represent the Mauawatu district and not Palmerston, and ho- supported the amendment. Mr. M'Hardy favoured 20 per cent. . Mr. Batchelor agreed to modify his amend, ment to 20 nor cent. Mr. Cohen favoured a fixed sum, and urged • the committee to act in a generous manner towards the Union. The committee should seo a reasonable sum exacted in tho interests' of the Association,' but they should not go into tho matter of profit. .. . Mr. Lang said that somo peoplo imagined that the grounds belonged to Palmerston, which was an idea that should bo dispelled. He called upon tho secretary to produce tho figures showing how much tho Palmerston peoplo had subscribed last year, as they were always talking about how muoh they did for the A. and P. Association. , Sir. Wood, M.P., put forward a strong appeal for the footballers, Tho amendment was put to the meeting, and carried by 20 votes to 7. Sir. Cohen moved a further amendment that tho basis should be upon a fixal charge. Some argument ensued as to whether the further amendment was in ordor, and it was ruled by tho chairman to be perfectly in order.
Mr. Cohen's amendment was lost, so that 20 per cent.. is now to be tho chargo, which was the original offer of the Rugby Union. FEILDINS OFFER FAVOURED. (BT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Association and the Feilding Racing Clubr-to the New Zealand Union, and strongly recommended that the latter offer be accepted, aa the' Union considers that the A. and P. Campbell, Cavanagh, ami himself, bo appointed wjth a view of considering the question of curtailing representative matches, and to rcjwrt to the committeo for tho consideration of delegates at the next annual meeting.
