Mr. Thorn said that 'the Union desired io do away with provision for under-ratc workors. His Honour: At this stage it is very silly to suggest it. How can you do away with-incom-petent workers, if they are incompetent through old age?. Do you want such men to starve? ' Mr. Thorn: No, the trouble is that there are no old mon. His Honour: If that is what you want yon might as well save your breath. The case comes, on for hearing later oil at the present sittings of the Court. At'the Police Court to-tiaj two publican!, namod Matthew Dawson mid l'rancis Porter were, charged- with selling under-proof, whisky. _ Tho evidence-showed that in one case whisky contained GiU par cent, proof spirit, and in the other 70 per cent., instead of 75 per cent, in both cases. The breaking down had been left to employees of-defen-dants, and - the breaches were not wilful. The Magistrate (Mr. Widlowson) said if the broaches had been wilful he would have inflicted Bovere. penalties; Each defendant wa» fined 405., with costs, £6 13s. '- '
