On tho arrival of the express from tho South on Saturday evening (says tho "Ashburton Guardian"), a man, who appeared to bo slightly under the influenco of liquor, was, on alighting from the train, promptly accosted by one of tho constables on the platform, and inquiries wero made regarding a case the traveller was carrying. "This is a case of beer I have brought into tho town exclusively for my own uso," he stated in reply to a question; but, as tho case was not sufficiently labelled, tho .polios, with a view to gaining full particulars, detained tho paSsengcr and proceeded to open up the case on the platform, tho contents of which proved to bo empty bottles nicely arranged in straw protectors. It has not been ascertained who is responsible for tho hoax. Had tho man himself been hoaxed ? There is no weakness nioro. dangerous than shyness.
