SOUTHLAND WINTER SHOW.
(BY TEr.EUBAM—rEESiJ ASSOCIATION.) Ir.veroarsill, June IG. The Southland Winter Show was opened this afternoon by the Hon. R. M'Nab, Minister for Agriculture. Last, year's show was considered to have roached high-water mark in quality; yet this year's cxmbits, chougn in some classes not ■ quite so numerous, were eoual in merit to tho high standard then seti 1 despite the fact that the season has not been so good as last. One of the most notable events of tho show was tho heavy scoring in cheese of Mr. John Sawyers, of Edendale. He won twelve out of fourteen awards in four classes for factory, and was awarded for the third successive year tho handsome sixty guinea cup, which now becomes his in feo simple. Mr. Sawyers has offered a valuable trophy, not necessarily a cup, for future annual competition under conditions similar to those pertaining to tho trophy he has just won. There was no factory butter entered, but farmors' buttor exhibits wero good. The display of root crops was exceptionally fine, oven for this district.' Tho judge of apples stated that the limestone country round about Winton and Lime Hills was ideal, for the culture of these fruits, and that tho local apples shown, though fewer in number and variety, wero equal in quality to those in the Government exhibit. Tho Agricultural Department exhibit here, as, elsewhere, was tho centre of considerable interest, and its value as an object lesson was freely admitted.
