IN PORT
THE COIUNTHIC'S HUMAN FREIGHT. It was a warm May day ' (70 degrees in the shade) when the White' Star liner Corinthic pulled out of tho muddy Thames and thrust hor noso into tho Channel with.over four hundred passengers on hoard. Sho arrived in port yesterday afternoon" and drawing alongside the Queen's Wharf in the rawness that preceded the dark, with a sharp-fanged southerly tolling those on board that there is a deal of difference between merry May in England and jocund June on this side of tho world. Anxious to seo all there was to bo seen passengers lined the bulwarks—a jolly, laughing lot, that seemed to reflect the joy of a broader, cleaner lifs than the congested cities of Old England. Thore may have beon a few homesick among them: but if there were, they carefully concealed their malady, for all seemed to be only too ready to laugh uproariously at any sally mado by ono of themselves or their friends on the wharf. The accent of half-a-dozen countics dropped from tho chattering passengers to tho wharf below, accentuated doubtless by tho oxcitement of.arrival. Taking stock of tho now settlors from the wharf, there appeared to be at least threo womon to every man. Tho immigrants aro a good sturdy lot of tho artisan class, and most of them are supplied with the necessary money to g'ivo tlieni a start in their now sphero of action Judging by tho conversational broadsides fired from tho'ship and returned from the wharf, a great number of tho newcomers had friends here already, and the little re-unio'ns observed after the public gangway was lowered wcro rather pathetic in a way but all were glad to bo at their journey's' ond and ready to grapple with whatever fat* i, in store for thom.
