SMOKE CONCERT. "■ The. members of tbo recently formed Institute of Draughtsmen celebrated their successful establishment by holding a smoko concert at tho Hotol Windsor last evening, a largo nnnibor being present. The President of ! the Institute, Sir. Marchbanks (Engineer- ■ in-Chief, 'Wellington and Manawatu Railway Co.), occupied the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Sir. H'. J. Blow , ,• (Public Works_ Department) and Mr. W. 0. Kensington (Under-Secretary'for linnds). ' Mr. J. D. Watt,. Secretary of the Institute, opened with the toast, "President and Vice-Presidents," and iii tho- course of a, brief introductory speeoh said that. tha function lmd been rather hurriedly arranged, but, nevertheless, as events turned . out, members had responded heartily. In their President, Mr. Marchbanks, they had an enthusiastic draughtsman, who took a keen interest in the- affairs of tho Institute, •while their viee-pvesidents had for many - years been •_intimately . connected.' with •draughtsmanship. ■ .In conclusion, lio hoped • ' that the Institute would fostor' not only their professional interests, but promote tho social relationship of its mombers. Endeavours would bo luado to obtainspecial legislation, with tho,.yiow of registering as a. corporate body. Suitable responses wore mado' by Messrs. . Marchbanks, J. Campbell (Government Architect), and J. Davis (Chief Draughtsman, District Survey Office), who urged upon tha younger members of'tho Institute tho value of professional ambition ; tho- advancement (if their porsonal .and corporate interests would bo best served by tho strengthening ' of their Institute. : • . ■ i ■

Ronayno, General' Manager of tha Nov,' Zealand _ Railways, proposed t]io. toast of "Tho Institute."- .Draughtsmanship, as a profession, bad, in a commercial sense, its limits, x aiid promotion came to aspiring draughtsmen in other fields. Many successful. draughtsmen bccamo engineers.' He had heard objection expressed about the systemof grouping draughtsmen and clorks together in their classification and promotion scheme. To thono objections ho would say that" grouping did not affect promotion. When tho.v wanted a good clerk they, took tho first clerk on tho list, and passed'oVor tho draughtsmen. If w'cy wanted' a draughts, man they passed tho elorks by on tho other side. : Mr. Marchbanks briefly responded. r.Tho toast, "Kindred Institutions," was proposed by Mr. R. R. Porcivnl (Survey and responded to by Messrs. Yourel'n and C. E.
