The Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, speaking at the National Club," affirmed that the internal condition of the liberal party was wholesome and sound. There were no differences requiring periodical plastering by some artificially contrived and ambiguous formula. Still, the Liberals must aim each year at a larger concentration of effort on a smaller number of Bills. The old age pensions scheme was not hostile to oxisting thrift agencies, or to the subsequent grafting upon it of a State-aided contributory plan. He opposed any inquisitorial examination as to thp character of applicants for pension. Exclusion of applicants on account of receipt of poor law l-oliof was temporary, ponding the adjustment of the poor law system at an early date.
