GREAT UNIONIST VICTORY.

INTENSfe EXCITEMENT AT ' MANCHESTER. The result of tho North-West Manchester election was declared on iipril 24 as follows: —Mr. W. Joynson Hicks, [1., 5417; Mr. W. Churchill, L., 4988; Mr. Dnii Irving, Soc., 276; Unionist majority over Liberal, 429; Unionist majority over Socialist, 5141. Manchester went mad with excitement when tho result of tho poll was made known. Vast crowds paraded tho streets oheering lustily, houses wero illuminatod, rockets fired, the wholo town ringing fr.om end to end with delirious joy. Inside tho Town Hall wore over five hundred people who had obtained special invjtar tions, and they were massed in. the; corridors like a public meeting, seething with oxcitement. I'ho ballot boxes were all in tho oounting room by. 8.15, and as forty counters, wero ongaged the figures were out at. 9.30— a.capital-piece of work. : Directly it was seeu that Mr. JoynsonHieks had won, Mr. Churchill was the first to congratulate him. "I must say you are a real brick to say what you have said," replied Mr. Jo.vnson-Hicks, and everyone felt that tho tension had been relieved by that manly, exchange of courtesies.

■ Outside in tho corridor the first hint of the result was obtained at 9.20, when some-' one came from tho counting room and whispered "Hicks."
