PALMERSTOTf., . . MAGISTRATE'S .COURT SITTING. Somo Foxton cases. were taken at tho Palraerston S.M. Court yesterday.. Walter Godwin Rcid and John Weller were charged with, the-theft of fivo bales of. hemp, valued at £20, from the New Zealand Shipping Co. Roid pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment witfi hard labour. /
In the case against Welier, it was stated that thero wore 32 bales of hemp in the shod on Juno 2. It was discovered that five bales had been stolen, and these were recovered by tho police. Roid had been in charge cf the shed for a time, r.nd it was arranged to sell the hemp and . divide the profits between the two accuscd. The fibro was to be mixed with tho lonic shipment. Accuscd pleaded guilty,, and was committed to the Supreme. Court. Bail was alloived on his recognisance for £100, and one surety of £100, or two of £50. _ In tho Longburn case, in which Gordon Williams Francis Horam Hart was charged with forging a cheque for £6 las.', drawn on tho Bank of New South Wales on Juno 8, purporting to bo. signed by C. Golding, and uttered to John Permain, of Palmerston, accused purchased '• some tools from Mr. Permain, and gave':a. cheque'in payment. Having pleaded guilty, ho was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. MASTERTON. ' ' ' TOWN LANDS TRUST. -. ..' Tho Masterton Trust Land: Trustees met last evening, when there were present:— Messrs. T. B. Mitchell, T. Wagg, O. Prague!! C. E. Daniell, E. G. Eton,-W. H. Jackson, H; C. Robinson, and R. Kr'ahagen. This was tho first meeting since the recent..election of three now Trustees. Mr. Mitchell was reelected to tho chair unopposed, returning thanks for the honour, and stating that ■ho would not again take tho chair, but would give new members a chance. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £875 15s. sd. ... Tho secretary of the Masterton Fire Board wrote asking tho. Trustees to hold oyer tho question of a lease until after the Board met. This was agreed to. • Messrs., Izard and Weston, solicitors, .returned a draft debenture for renewing loan of £1000 on Town Hall, of which tho Harbour Board commissioners had approved; and also sent a draft deed of covenant: The secretary of tho Masterton Technical' School applied for an annual grant- of £100. Consideration was held over till tho estimates had.been prepared. . . It was decided not to. have... a ..now metal coiling put in tho Town Hall at "present./ It was resolvod that the Trustees sign tho debenturo for the Town Hall loan. Tho chairman and Mr. ..Daniell .were : appointed'commissioner?" for tho loan for the Trust. . A I<h>B discussion' ensued •as -to tho' 1 exchango of sites, the matter -which has created much dissension on the Trust in tho past. Eventually it was unanimously, agreed that'a deputation consisting of., Messrs. Jackson, la'agnoll, and tho chairman, wait upon tho Minister for Justice, and discuss the matter with ninij those members being given authority to cschango on terms,agreed.
THE MASTERTON .SEAT. ■ . Mr. W. B. Matlieson,; the well-known Eketaliuna farmer, who is spoken of as' a probable candidate to contest the .Masterton seat in the Opposition., interest at the nest general election, informed - our Wairarapa representative that ho had so far made no definite decision, but that sooner than see Mr. Hogg have a walk-over ho would enter the lists. Mr. Matlieson said that by becoming a candidate ho would not really bo studying' his interests, but lie would consider. it . his duty not to allow the Government candidate a win. by .default. There was no doubt that Mr. Hogg was a popular member in many respects, and this was apparently tho reason why many Opposition supporters wero disinclined to go against him. Naturally, 'Masterton town" itself was a preponderating influence in the general election, and no doubt a great deal would depend upon what tho Opposition doctors tbero thought, but ho. had mailo up his mind that if nothing wcro done, by any of thcra he would bo a candidate. Mr. P. L. HollingSj v.'ho is also spoken of as a candidate, lias also not yet made any- definito decision;

P'Leary, who' recently retired from tho-committeeof .the Mastorton District High School, after fifteen years' service, was made a presentation < by his lato colleagues on .Thursday evening. V ' ' . The Mastorton' branch of - the Y.M.C.A'; issaid to bo with} Mr.'C. P. Webster, of Australia, with a .'view to securing his services, as secretarv to tho Masterton Association. FEILDINGv Feilding's Chamber of Commerce decided to support the i'oxton Chamber's agitation for a Harbour Board for-Foxton. , : . About 5000 head of. sheep were yarded for' the Feilding sale to-day,' with a fair yarding of cattle. Buyers wero not numerous. Mr. R. Heald's tender for the erection of tho new Roman' Catholic school building in Derby Street has Jjeen accepted. The price is somewhere about £3000/ and . the building is to be a handsome brick structure. The Mayor of Feilding has, received a telegram fronvthe Premier inviting the Borough to contribute- a banner bearing- tho'.words "Welcome from Feilding," to be.exhibited at Auckland on the occasion-of the' visit of tho American fleet. An invitation to. contribute such banners-has-been sent-to all cities and towns in .-the Dominion. 'Mr. Trewin has agreed to tho Premier's suggestion.

One of tho hockey matches of the season to enthusiasts who livo in the Wairarapa was played on Thursday in front' of about 200 spectators on the Recreation Reserve, Grey town. The match was between ladios,
the lua Toas (Greytown) and Hinemoas (Carterton). Kia. Toa was victorious by fivo goals to nil. The first, goal was a peculiar one, being kicked, accidentally of "course, by the Hinemoa's goalkeoper from a shoot by Hiss Ruby Humphries. Miss E. Humphries and Miss Ella Bicknell were responsible for a goal each, and Miss Clara Magujre shot two goals.. Miss Beatson, of .the Kia Toas, is their' best "hitter." For tho liincmoa team, Miss Flora Ashton, Miss Nona Telford, and Miss Meenkin (goalkeeper) descrvo special mention: After the match an adjournment was made to tho Oddfellows 1 Hall for a pleasant- tea provided by the homo team. Musical items were rendered, and an.interesting speech by. Mr. Wm. Moore, ii Cartertqiij and vice-president of the Hockey, Club, concluded the afternoon. LEVIN. . v A little girl, eight,years old, daughter of Mr. J. Donaldson, a local restaurant-keeper, lell from the second floor of her father's building on Thursday, a distance of about 14 feet. Tho child had a wonderful escape, for beyond a severe shaking, she received 110 injury. Tho Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company has been offering, for ' sale tho large gravol pit 'in tho vicinity of tho local rail-way-'station, and has now sold Mr. B. R. Gardener, the Mayor. There bavo been a number of small thefts reported from the Wcraroa end of Levin, and many of the residents in that quartet now find it advisable to. keep any of their small movable articles uncler lock and key. The impudence of certain persons who havo thought fit to borrow the Boating Club's boats without asking for them and. then failed to return them has already been mentioned. ..Again, a boat has been missed for threo days, when it was. found on Thursday, on the shore on the,,opposite, side of tho lake. A petition for a lamp on Pinfold- Road was not grantod, but one is to be erected' at tho termination of tho pipe lino in-Vogol Street. Councillor Watson resigned from tho. Council. The ranger was instructed to. prosecute persons rescuing stock. A voto of appreciation of the manager of "'tho Gas Works for his careful management was passed. The No-Licenso party has presented a muff and a travelling rugtoMrs. Brightwell, who intends'to leave for England on June 18. OTA.KI. The death occurred on Thursday of tho infant child of Mr; J. R. Bills, jun. Tho funeral took place yesterday, afternoon. At a meeting of ladies' on Thursday after, noon, it was decided to tender tho Rev. Mr, and Mrs. Stcaly a farewell tea on July 11. Mr. and Miss Elaine Simcox, who havo been on a holiday trip through the Main Trunk line, havo returned to Otaki. Tho former is much improved in health. FEATHERSTON.
COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly ■ meeting of the Featherston County Council was held on Thursday at Martinborough, Councillor A. Matthews being in tho cnair. The treasurer reportod receipts amounting to £357 Bs. Gd., and accounts totalling £2325 15s. 3d. were passed for payment. Mr. Cobb,was,appointed acting treasurer during the illness of Councillor Considine. Messrs. Shirkey and Homo, and Mr. G. E. Purcell were . granted renewals of slaughterhouse licenses. It was decided to accept Mr. J. Tucker's oifer to clean out tho drain in front of- his • place annually, provided tho Council : contributed half at a cost of Is. a chain. Mr. J. AV. Hcndorson was granted permission to appoint Mr. Tresen his. deputy .ranger for the county boundary near Groytown. Quotations were received for road rollers, but no action taken. The overseers ( wore instructed to procure gum boots, up to four pairs, for men employed in dram work. An application for tho expenditure of thirds on Bluff Road wa? left to Councillor Nis. .Mr. J. T. M. -Hornsby" wrote anknowledgihg receipt of application for grants, and it was decided to ask. him to make application for. a £500 grant for tho.Rimutaka Road.. An order regarding rates was confirmed,- and ! Councillors Benton and Nix were appointed to sign tho rato roll. An estimate of £1473 for a bridge over tho Turanganui was received and referred on' to the settlers interested. - Mr. R. A. Croudis,, of the railway - staff here, has .been transferred to Masterton, and will, be succeeded by Mr. Baillie, from Wellington; '
