CHEMISTS' CONFERENCE.
THE GATHERING CONCLUDED. ] PROPOSED DEFENCE ASSOCIATION. : 1 The Chemists' Conference W£&. brought ■to • \ conclusion yesterday, after l a successful ses- •; lion.'.' ... ' i- ' ' ,Afc' yesterday's meeting, Mr. Gower. (Wei- : lington) proposed the formation! of a Chemists' Association,* in a most able' < manner, making some very good points. He took;': many extracts' from cases, that hare, • appeared -' of late years in the English "Chemist and' Druggist." He thought that a lovy . should be made , for each' chemist, which he was sure would prove a real good investment'. • Many < speakers followed, and all favoured the proposal. Mr.' M'Kenzie said that' all chemists fully recognised the importance of such an association, and he was quite sure that some good would result from Mr. Gower's "efforts, but'at the present tjme the newly-formed Federation was not in a good financial position to undertake steps in that direction. It was-most likely that different financial arrangements, would be made for the futiije, which would have tb; be submitted at the next conference.'' Mr. Baillie proposed "that the matter be kept steadily in view by the local associations, and they were to report at the next meeting.Mr. Gower the motion, and urged sound arguments as to why the mattei" should bo taken up. Tho . Spirit Duty -Committee presented its report,- which, after 'consideration and discussion, , was: received, .and the Committee was-thanked. It was decided that, as the new regulations inflicted no hardship on chemists in the: pursuit of their'ordinary avocation, no further-steps ,were necessary. Mr.\Bennington presented the report of the Poisons "Committee, which was adopted. Oh .the proposal of Mr. Wallace, v seconded by Mr. M'Kenzie, it was decided that this Comiiiittoe recommended that the consideration _ of, tho Pflisoiis Bill be referred to tho executive, with instructions' that a copy of the Bill bo posted to each association, tho associations to report to tho Secretary in duo course; and that tho executive forward to each association copies of. their .resplutions and reoqmmendations' they desire 1 to'submit, to the Minister'for Health. On the motion of Mr. Bagley, seconded by Mr. Hobson, matters educational waro .left in the handsof the Pharmacy Board, which it was . felt was the most capablo body of undertake "the work. • Mr. "Williams' moved that tho Executive of the New ; Zealand Chemists' Federation consider the advisability'of approaching Parliament with a view to,placing opticians on a legal footing, for the public interest. This was seconded by Mr. llatjen, and was carried.'' Congratulations', were expressed to tho Central Pharmaceutical Association and their President for the able manner in which they had carried 'out their duties, and for tho ■ kindness extended to visjting chemists. Two papers were read. One was by Mr. White (Dunodin), dealing with pharmaceutical'education throughout the Empire, and ' tho other was by Mr. Ewing .(Dunedin), on the mineral wealth of. the Dominion.
