RAKAIA IN COLLISION. . A Press Association message from Christchurch states that the New Sir Company have been advised froui Monte Video that the Rakaia has been in cuhiMyii vtdu Asturias, and sustained slight damage. She will sail on June 13. THE PAPANUI. To-morow the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Papainii is expected to .proceed to Lyttelton to complete discharge. Her Homewardi loading programme is as follows:—Oainaru on June 18,. Port Chalmers on the 21st, Bluff on the 24th, Timaru on' tlie 27tli, Lyttelton on the 30tli, whence she is expected to leave for London on July 4. THE TURBINE MAORI: ; According to the Christchurcli "Press,", the Maori was expected to come out of dock yesterday. On Tuesday the timber sheathing of tho blade of the bow rudder was replaced, and is how being caulked.' The shaft of the rudder is being lifted out, and will be brought ashore for examination aud lepairs. The covers of the low pressure 'turbines have been lifted for inspection, and the other machinery is also being overhauled. It was found that the turbines were in parfcct condition, and that the blades showed no signs of wear. A large staff' aro engaged on the work, and 'in order to got the shaft and a coupling out of the vessel, it will be necessery to cut through three, of the decks and the top of the tank. The Maori'resumes running in the "ferry" service on June 15.from Lyttelton. . . - . . THE END OF H.M.S. PENGUIN. .According to the "Sydney Morning Herald,* . the work of converting' H.M.S. Penguin into a ' v depot ship, 1 commenced ' about a month ago, ' will not be completed for several weeks. Th». Penguin, which was foiuierly employed in surveying, has been long laid up, and it was not until the arrival of the new Admiral that a use for lior was found: The question of erecting new barracks was under consideration, when ; the Admiralty authorities, acting-on a suggestion from this station, authorised . tlie fitting . ■up of the Penguin with cabins and berths for , about 12 \ officers and 200. men. The Penguin will bo permanently moored alongside Garden Island. H.M.S. Torch, which it has been frequently suggested should be handed over -to the ■ . Naval Brigade as a drill ship, is : still in x». serve. v c i'-v THE STAR OF NEW ZEALAND. - The Tyser luier,.Star of New Zealand, which vis due at Aucklandi, on June 16 from' New York and Australia, had a , stormy voyage from New York to Melbourne, and had the misfortune to run on a bank in Port' Philip, but'got off within a couple of hour 6. '"It was not a storm, but a, hurricane, that we passed, through," remarked Mr." Tom Bowling; second - officer of the steamer,-, in referring to an ex- .: perience which befol that vessel during the . .. trip. "For two hours," continued the officer, "the hurricane raged with becoming strength, " lashing the sea feather-white and causing dense volumes 'of spray to dash over the vessel." A couple of sails, Which- the ; steamer had ■ spread on the foremast to help her along, were blown away like paper, but beyond this she suffered "no 'ill-effects from the 'disturbance. . Another notable feature of the voyage was the- - total absence of a y glimpse of the sun for eleven consecutive ■ days- whilst the vessel was crossing the Southern Ocean.'. During, this ■ . period not an observation could be..taken, the sky being continually obscured ill a deep gloom. The Star of New. Zealand, which left ( New York on April 12, made only one stop-" jiage (at St. Vincent) on the way.. She accom-. plished, therefore, an excellent voyage of 43 days from the American port- to Melbourne.,'. The vessel is expected to arrive in .Wellingtoa .about June 22. • f . ■
