7 —4 : — [Bt .tELEOKAPn.—PRKS9 ASSOCIATION.! - 1 - ' > Dunedln, June 10. A spccial meeting of tho University Council was held to-day to consider a motion ;by tho Rev. W. Hevrit'Son in favour of amending the constitution with a view to relating the primary and secondary department of,the educational system and also the general community more closely with the University. After discussion, a motion was carried to the effect that it is desirable that the constitution of tho Council be amended so as to include, not only representatives of tho Government, professorial board and graduates, but also representatives of the Education. Boards of Otago and Southland, and the high . school boards of Waitaki, Otago, and Southland, one representative for each of the five boards named. ■
The following resolution was also carried : "That the. Council deoms it,desirable that the Government should recogniso the high standard of qualification that holders of diplomas of the Otago mining school have to reach before obtaining diplomas, and'.amend the Mining Act, and tho Coal Mining Acts, so as to enable such persons to obtain mine managers' certificates on the production of certificates from tho authorised managers that they havo been employed in underground workings of the mine for a period of'three years."
