Tho Vivian Street Baptist Literary and Debating Society hold its weekly meeting on Tuesday night. There was a largo attendance, tho chair being taken by Rev. J. J. North. Thelisubjcct for tho evening was a debate on, "Is the City of Wellington a credit to its citizens." Tho speakers in tho affirma-. tive wero Messrs. Mountjoy and Fear, and in tho ncgativo Messrs. Humphreys and Ambury. An open discussion ensued, the general opinion boing expressed that Wellington was a credit to its citizens. On a vote boing taken as to the conduct of dobate, tho negativo oponors won by 15 to 11. Next Tuesday night, tho meeting will bo devoted to roadhi2s from Shakespeare's "Macbeth." It by 110 moans follows that because tlio Bishop of St. Asaph's Education Bill is utterly unacccptablo to us it • may not bo very wolcomo to a chastened Government. It is quito possible that Mr. H'Kenna may seo .in it rt golden bridge by which lie may escape from a very uncomfortable position.— " Tablet."
