This • remarkable contrast was put before tho Select Committee on Home Work in London recently l>y Miss Holden, a! home worker; Out of the Is. 3d. she received for making such a costume, she said, sho had to pay for cotton, and hor fare to and from the City, or, if she had two or threo costumes to make at the same time, a proportion of her fare. "It takes three or three and a half hours to make a costume, oven when you are thoroughly used to tho work. I sometimes start work at seven in tho morning, and keep on till eleven at night. When I am in continuous work I can earn from 13s. to 14s. a week —but there are slack times." Miss Holden said she worked for a middleman. She could not get work in any. other way. v . ■
