T. Macarthy gave a delightful "At Home .yesterday afternoon at her, house in BouJcott Street. The floral decorations were particularly charming. In the drawing-room they were of wattle and spring flowers, with autumn foliage, and in the room where tea was served tfioro wero most exquisite pink carnations, while the table was adorned with pink begonias and cyclamen, and lamps covered with dainty rose-coloured shades. In •an up-stairs room a fortune-teller was kept busily employed, and in another room an Ascot gamo was played while half 'a dozen horses ran ceaseless races, and there - were prizes for tho guests to whose lot tho, winners fell. A string band, stationed iii tho conservatory by the tea-room, played all afternoon. _ Mrs. Macarthy received in a charming frock of cream laco. Mrs. Rutter wore a. frock of pale pink taffetas, with cream laco blouse; Miss Kane, frock of Pariscoloured, canvas; with touches of browri; and Miss Hardinge-Maltby, who, with these two ladies, helped ! to serve the, tea, was in violet silk; Lady -Ward wore a pastelle blue cloth and x black • hat; Miss Ward, rose-coloured cloth and hat with roses; Mrs. Hislop was in black and white toque; Mrs. Izard, navy blue sicilienne costume; Mrs. Rhodes, black brocade, , and black' bonnet, relieved with silver; Mrs. Stott,.: exceedingly pretty, frock of cinnamon brown cloth, with oriental trim-, ming, and cream .vest, with' a touch of blacl; silk on the bodice, and black picture hat; Mrs. Hamer, graceful frock of brown taffetas with bands or ; Miss Keniber, palo pink, frock, with white plumed hat; Miss Wylie, pale green silk frock with cream lace
trimmings; Mrs. S.'Harcourt, striped. black and prune costume with vest of cream lace, and smart hat; Mrs. Kane, black'frock; Mrs. Menteath, brown costume,. brown hat with black bird; Mrs. Birkett, cream costume; Miss Skorrett, long, black caracul 'coat* with black frock, small black'hat; Mrs. Jones, dark.tailor-made; Mrs. T. Ward, violet/silk. Among. others present were Mesdames Prouse, Ponsonby, Gilmer, Macdonald, Komber, Kendall, Christie, Beere,. Watson, Ewen, Butts, Wylie, Richardson, Simpson, MacEwan, Tuckcyi and Fulton, and Misses' • Coates, Partridge, Faricourt, Butts, Brandon, Ewen, and Hall-Jones. Miss Jull, of _Waipawa, is at present on a few days' visit to Wellington, and' is ■ staying with Mrs. A. A. Co'rrigan. ; The Misses Stuart (3) returned from , a trip to Sydney by the Warrimoo yesterday. Mrs. 0. S. Watkins was also a passenger from Sydney. ' Mrs. Charles Smith (Christchurch) and little daughter are staying with Mrs. Wyn Irwin at Oriental Bay. , • - . There are many, cases of sickness in private families where it is'desirable .that'the patient should receive a certain amount of skilled atand yet where the family cannot afford either, to engage a trained nurse or to send the patient to a private hospital. Often also in the crowded homes of Wellington •there is no accommodation for a nurse. To deal with such .cases'the Private Nurses' Association has engaged a nurse who, under :the direction of doctors! will visit cases, during the day. A fee will be charged by the association' for her services proportionate' to the length of time she has to . spend in attending each patient. Nurse Attkins, who has. been engaged by tho association, has gained: her .experience, in London, and was trained there, at St. Mary's Hospital.' One of the most interesting, weddings ■which has taken place in Carterton for some time (writes our Carterton correspondent) was . that .of Miss Gladys Ellen Brown, 3'oungest daughter of Mr. James Brown, Mayor of this town, to Mr. Frankfort Eccles-Fleiiry,. of Eketahuna, which was celebrated in St: Mark's Church yesterday. .The bridegroom was attended by Mr. Raymond Smith,. of Pahiatua, as best man.*v The bride, who was attired in,white silk and lace, with veil and orange blossoms, was attended by two'tiny , bridesmaids, / her nieces, Miss - Dora Taylor and Iliad Gwen Major; who wero dressed: in white'silk, with red bows on'their hair. A full choral service was accorded them, as ■Mr. Brown is one of our most ardent churchmen.' The Rev. R. Young, vicar of St. Mark's, officiated. ■ ' , ' <
