WAIRONGOMAI.
Wairongomai, the estate of the late Mr. J: P. ltussell, near Feat hers ton, was cut up and sold last year for something 1 over £100,000 (writes our Wairarapa correspondent). It was thought, at tho time that many of the purchasers would burn their fingers, becauso it was- contended that tho prices paid were too high. There was 110 doubt that somo of tho prices paid were in oxccss of the proper valuo of tho land—in one'case £30 an! aero was paid, where tho reserve was fl7 an aero—but it is satisfactory to noto that, although they had a very bad season, the new owners' afo doing very well. As for tho estate itself, it is said to be in a stato of transformation, the greatest improvement being the clearing of the gorse, which formerly was such an eyesore. Wairongomai is likely to prove one of the most thriving land settlements in the North Island. And the Government could have purchased it for £70,000!
