RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS.

THE GOVERNMENT AWARDS. .■, The new scholarships instituted by tho Government for the encouragement 1 of scientific research have been awarded, for the present year to tho following students:— Miss Clara M. Taylor, Victoria College, Wellington. Norman B. Bell, 8.A., Canterbury College. - Alexander Gordon Macdonald, Bachelor . of: Mining Engineering, Otago Uni- ■ x versity. One annual scholarship is available for each University Collego,- but no application was received this year from the Auckland' students,'_ and the Auckland Research Scholarship Board did not make any nomination.. The "'scholarship, is worth 1 £100 a _ year, with collego laboratory fees, with collego laboratory fees, the- cost of tho cost of special apparatus or books required for research purposes, and travelling expenses incurred in the process;of research. Miss Taylor, who'in 1906 secured honours in organic chemistry, will make a special study of the fat industry, as her research subject.. Tho manufacture of soap and candles is included by this industry, so that important', commercial possibilities are involved in its scientific study. Mr. Bell will investigate the New Zealand iron sands, and Mr. Macdonald will study tho brown coals of Otago ; in; Tegard to their occurrence and attributes, present uses, .and possibilities of development. The researches of each student will bo supervised by a special board, and tho scholarships,Hwhich are given for one year, may be extended for two further years if tho Board so recommends, and the Minister for Education approves.
