A TRUE QUINNAT SALMON.
(BY TKLKGRAni. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) "■ Chrlstchurch, June 8. :Mr. Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, secured in the Haldane Creek, Opihi, near. Temnk'a, a fi'sh which he believes to be a true quinriat salmon. Mr. E. 11. Waite, curator- of themuseum, has pronounced it to be a true quihnat salmon. .The specimen is about two feet long, and .if in prime condition would weigh from 20 to 30 pounds. Mr. Ayson mentioned that ivhen it left-tlie- sea it-probably was in; first-class conditiou, • but- the'' long journey' it had. made up the stream,' about one hundred' and twenty miles, had-marred its beauty. . He thought the specimen Wiiß about four years old, and if not one of the. original fish , turned out, was one of "theii first descendants. The Government intone to introduce the Atlantic salmon,; a .splendid sporting-fish, into the Waiau River, Southland, and to preserve it until it was thoroughly acclimatised there.
