ENTERTAINMENTS.
OPERA HOUSE. JULIUS KNIGHT-HUMPHREY SEASON, icrowded, houso greeted the presentation of The Prisoner of Zenda" at the Opera Houso on Saturday evening. The swiftlymoving action of tlio play and the vim of the players mako the performance go with dash and sparkle, comparablo even to the flying points of the stage«ducls. Mr. Julius Knight mado an unexceptionable Rudolf, especially when in uniform; and Mr. Harry Plimmer played thq rival Prince witfli heartiness and sang froid. -Miss Ola Humphrey prevailed very much with the audience as Princess Flavia, not only looking the part, but playing it. Thero was a good general support. j On Wednesday and Thursday evenings will bo staged " Claudian," with its scenes of ancient Byzantium, and. its big earthquake. The scliemo is poetic, and the whole atmosphere, belongs to early Christian times. The possibilities for stage pictures are unlimited, and, with the picturesque costumes of the period, form, an unusually important element of attraction. Mr. Julius Knight, in the role of' Claudian, and Miss Ola Humphroy as Almida, aro said to ho most suitably placed, while the company's full strength is required to fill an extensive east. "Claudian" will be followed for the farewell three performances 'by " A Royal Divorce," the Napoleonic drama so popular with playgoers.
THEATRE ROYAL. The Theatre Royal was packed again on Saturday evening, and tho audience enjoyed good entertainment. An interesting series of biograph pictures was submitted, and formed a prominent attraction. That clever 'Scotch oomedian, Mr. "Jock Willis, sang two amusing songs, "Hush" and "Heilan' Wedding," and,had to answer to recalls. Following this item canie a sword dance by,the nimble Price Sisters,which elicited loud, applause. When Eva Lee and her little piccaninnies took possession of the stage merriment assumed possession of tho house, -and • the -laughter-continued till the clever mites were led away. Mr. Fred Bransgrove, a vocalist with a " double voice," and Mitss. Connie Solomon, serio and dancer, submitted new items,, and were successful. A favourite performer is tjbill Miss Blanch Carelli. Her contributions on Saturday evening were " When We'ro Together " and " The Swallows," and both were artistically rendered, - winning loud recalls. Carltori .and Sutton, patter artists, vocal comedians and dancers, established themselves favourites. Miss Brightie Smith gave a pleasing selection of songs, and kept tlio audience, well amused during her turn. Biograph pictures brought the programme to a conclusion.
"UNDER THE STARS AND STRIPES." Mr. H. N. Holmes, who is to deliver a lectuie entitled " Under tho Stars and Stripes " at St. Thomas's Hall this 'evening, spent six months last year visiting .the United States and Canada. Travelling from Vancouver to Los Angeles 110 visited all the famous sconic resorts of Oregon and California, l'ho journey from the West through Salk Lake, Denvor, and Chicago, to the East; will ho splendidly illustrated. An opportunity' will be taken. ;to describe the points of historic interest in Philadelphia, .Washington, Richmond (Virginia),, and Boston; Mr. Holmes secured-unique pictures of George Washington's home, Longfellow's house, the tomb of Paul Revere, Ralph Connor's Church, besides soma original illustrations of ' Chicago and Harvard, Universities. The. matchless beauties of the Canadian Rockies'.will be exhibited as well as the wonderful grain stores of Winnipeg. , , ' t
■ MUNICIPAL ORGAN RECITALS. ; -Mr. Maughan Barnett will give'.the weekly orgai. recital in the Town Hall to-morrow night at eight o'clock, when he will include in his programme the popular "Boccherini" Gavotte, Schubert's "Am Meer," Mendelsohn's "Sixth Sonata," and pieces b,v Lachner', Borowski, and Adam. ( OLYMPIA SKATING RINK. Now that the skating floor at the' Ol.vmpia has been put in good order, local skaters ■hav9 every reason to 'be: satisfied with (lie efforts of the management to make skating a pleasure, and the largo attendances daily are evidence that those offorts are appreciated . To-morrow night-there will bo a lioop race,- on Thursday a hockey match, and on Friday the ovening session will be under the patronage of the recently-formed Agonothetes Skating.Club. : ■ ; '■ ■' r .v, •' ( ELITE SKATING RINK. . / Skating appeals to be a welcome pastime to the pleasure Peeking public, judging from the large' attendance at the Elite' Skating Rink each session. On Saturday the marvellous exhibitions given by the chief instructor, were, much' appreciated.
