PAPANUI DUE MONDAY. At seven o'clock yesterday morning the N.Z. Shipping Company's steamer Papanui resumed her voyage from llobart. The vessel is expected to reach here on Monday evening. REGULATIONS FOR LOADING AND STOWAGE OP BALLAST. An Order in Council is gazetted this week, revoking certain regulations respecting the loading and stowage of ballast, which were made in 1900. The new; regulations are as follow:— 1. When the ballast of a British ship is composed wholly or partly of shingle .or sand, it shall be the duty of the master to have it properly levelled down and' protected from slipping by close-fitting and properly secured shifting boards running fore aim aft in the amidships section of the ship. Such' boards shall bo carried above the level of the ballast to a height equal to a quarter of the beam of the ship in that part of the hold where the Hallast is stowed, or close up to the first intervening deck. If the ballast does not extend to the bulkheads of the hold, transverse closely fitting boards shall be fitted across the hold on a level with the top of the ballast to prevent it slipping away fore and aft of the ship. '• 2. It shall also be the duty of the master of any such ship to have one or two _ (as may be considered necessary) tiers of shingle or sand, carried in pound and properly secured bags, stowed on the top of the- looso shingle or sand formiug the ballast or cargo of such ship, and also at each side of such ballast or cargo, in v such a manner as shall prevent the loose shingle or sand from shifting its position through stress of weather other unforeseen cause. ' ■ 3. Any person committing, a. breach of the above regulations shall be liable to a fine not exceeding fifty "pounds.

Pilotage and port charges collected at the Bluff last month amounted, to and ordinary revenue for tho month to J31542 14s. 2d., . being an increase of .CT'2 Bs. 7d. compared with the same month of last year, and an increase of <£G2B 18s. 2d. for the four months of the . year compared with the figures for the cor- < responding period of 1907. To-morrow the Union Company's steamer Rakanoa is fixed to leave Westport for Sydnty. The AVanaka is to load at the Bluff on June 11, and at Timaru and Oarnaru on the two' succeeding days ' for Napier, . Gisborne, and Auckland.
