TO KILL CORSE.
When love is out of fashion, the gorse is out of bloom." I was reminded (says our travelling correspondent) of this old saying when in the Kaituna the other day. Thero is a considerable quantity of gorso in some parts of the district; it is in full bloom too. It seems a pity simply to burn oS gorse on land which is easily ploughable, as it comes up again: very soon from the stump, whereas if grubbed off below the crown it rarely, if ever, gives further sign of activity. MULE BREEDING. The Government of Queensland is reported to be about to adopt measures to encourage the systematic breeding of mules. So far little has been done in that direction in Australia. South America has 7,00.0,000 mules, Europe. 1,488,000,. the United . States 3,600,000, Mexico 335,000, and Australia only 1000 mules. , <
TAMING THE ZEBRA. The officer in charge of the Government fp.bra rancbo at Nairobi in British East Africa, after several years of experience with the zebra, came to tho conclusion that it is a highl.v intelligent animal, perfectly tamoable, quite docile, and could bo used for both saddle and harness. In taming and breaking zebras, experts aro agreed that much timo and patience and great gentloness aro necessary, as a rapid and terrifying method "breaks their hearts." This view was the eutcc/ino of long oxperience; in early days the- methods applicable to horses were employed, but l;hese ofton failed. It was an article of : faith among, those who used zebras for' harness work in tho Transvaal at an earlier date that tho animals l soon lost spirit and fire when kopt at 'work; and this was no doubt a result of the too hasty breaking which iB now condemned.
