Consideralilo interost has hcen stirred up of lato by a local challenge for a raco from here to Dunedin and back between tho Do Dion and Russell motor-cars. Tho original ■ negotiations fell through, but to-day Mr. R. Murie, in 15/18 h.p. Russell, tried conclusions with Miv W. Stono in a 10-h.p. Do Dion Bouton, for a wager of £500 asido. Tho cars left at 5.15 this morning. Tho Do Dion arrived at Dunedin at 10.55 a.m., and stayed five minutes to replenish the potrol engine, being kept running, and arrived back in Invcrcargill at 4.-17 p.m., thus doing tho wholo journoy in 11 hours 32 minutes, a romarkablo record considering tho condition of tho roads. Tho Russell car broke a spring before reaching Clinton on the up journey; and had to be trucked back.
