MIRAMAR BOROUGH.
WATER SUPPLY AND DRAINACE. SUNDAY SPORTS. Thc'Miramar Borough Council met last evening, thero being present:—Tho Mayor (Mr. C. J. Crawford) and Councillors H. M'Leod, Bell, H. W. Cooper, Brodie, and W. Witt. A letter was received from tho secretary of tho Karori Golf Club, asking that a car bo run to Seatoun on Sunday morning, when it could bo availed of by the public generally. Ho had been in communication with Mr. Richardson, City Electrical Engineer, who informed him that his Department was willing to run a car as desired if tho Miramar Council consented. Tho writer understood that tho objection on tho part of tho Miramar Council was that tho city, would charge doublo mileago rates, and that it would not pay. Ho pointed out that the club members, numbering thirty at least, would bo going out to tho links every Sunday morning, so he trusted tho objections would bo removed. Tho Mayor said that the car could not ho run during church hours, and nothing should bo dono to in any way olfeud church-goers. Tho car could be used by anyone; ho was not in favour of putting on a special car. Councillor M'Leod remarked that considerable annoyanoo was being caused by football and hockey players, and it was not desirable to increaso it by encouraging golf. Tho .matter was referred to tho Tramways Committee. Mr. David K. Blair wrote on behalf of numerous residents of Karaka Bay, objecting t-o tho structure of a new building being erected. Tho letter was referred to tho Town Clerk for inquiry. A QUESTION OF MOTIVE POWER.
A letter was received from Mr. R. L. Mcstayer, M.lnst.C.E., regarding the water supply and sewerage. lie saw Mr. Richardson, City Electrical Engineer, with reference to obtaining electric current to drive the high lift pumps and air compressors. When ho ciscusscxHtho matter of water supply with tlio City Engineer somo timo ago, tile Engineer strongly advocated the adoption of high lift turbine pumps, electrically driven, similar to those he had installed for supplying Brooklyn and Kclburne, and as tho power required for tho pumps would bo largely in oxeess of that required for the air compressors, it would bo tho most economical course to drive tho latter also by electric motors. '• It would,' therefore, in tho writer's opmioii, bo advisable for,tho Council to ask tho City Council whether lit could obtain current, and, 'if so, to specify the lowest rate. J-no pnmps would bo driven by 20 B.H.P motors, which would only bo nscd at niglit -! the air compressors would have to run day and but would seldom.be worked up to the full, 10 B.H.P. at least for some years come; at_tho present, time, they would, not average 5 B.H.P. for tho wholo twenty-four hours. In default of tho Council obtaining current, or should tho rato per unit he too high, tho alternative would bo to instal oil ongmcs or to put up a suction gas plant Ho was making' inquiries as to the cost of each method. It would also bo advisable for tho Council to adviso the City Council that it would bo glad to have tho Venturi meter fixed shortly, so that it would bo in o posia lOll i mains to bo conriccted up to it As the 12m. mains could be obtained in tho Dominion, the meter should bo ordered now and lie understood that Mr. Morton, City Engineer, preferred that it should be provided and erected by his department. ,„ Tll , e ™ atter referred to tho Public Works Committee. ■ 1
A TRA.MCAR DIFFICULTY. Councillor Brodio mentioned''tlio difficulty ladies had in using tlio car leaving Seatoun at six minutes past five. It might bo desirablo to 1 havo additional cars running to prevent overcrowding. The Mayor said that the matter had had tho consideration of tlio Tramways Committee. Tlio troublo was that tlio , car was all right until work was started on tho Gas Company, s property, and the result was that conductors saved Toom for the workers by shutting out ladies at Seatoun. One woiilcl assume that tho only way to overcome the difficulty was for the City Council to put on a workers car, but thoy were not in favour of that, as these cars did not pay; but this Council had somo right to ask the City authorities to do it. Flo thought that the matter would bo fixed up shortly. Tlio credit balance -at the bank was reported to stand at £3405 Is. 2d. ; rho Public Works Comroittco recommended that tho street improvement works on Park Road and Alexandra Street be carried out by day labour, in accordance with tho plans and specifications prepared by Mr. Hanify. Tho Mayor remarked that day labour had always given satisfaction. • The report was adopted. J Tho accounts for payment were: District Jund Account, £141 15s. 7d.; Improvement Loan Account, £1117 3s. 6d.
