"GOING EASY."

THE PURCHASE OF LAND FOR SETTLE- : ' MENT. ; In the course of a conversation a few days ago, with a Dominion representative, a member of the "Wellington Land Purchase Board stated that there was nothing yet definite about the further purchase of land in the Wairarapa or Masterton .electorates. Owing to the, probable cost, it was very unlikely that it would pay the Government to purchase lea station, which was, in fact, now being. subdivided by the relatives .of the late-Mr. J. C. Andrew.;. Among other properties which have been inspected by the Land Purchase Board, were Kohiwai (3000 acres), Bowlands," and Brancepeth. The owners have no wish to part with.Kohiwai, and the Commissioners do not consider that Bowlands would be suitable for division in more than three or four grazing. runs. Brancepeth is divided into sixteen sections, and the Commissioners consider" that the prices at which tho properties are valued by their owners, necessitating an increase of 10 per cent."by the Government, preclude any recommendation of acquisition.. The caso of Tawaha, where a year's rent has been remitted, is citcd by-the Commissioners as. a good reason why caution should bo shown in the purchase of any further properties at a high price.
