OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB'S WINTER MEETING.

WAILETHE WINS THE CUP. . In recent years tho winter meeting of the Otaki Racing Club has been marked by unfavourable .wcathor. conditions, but tho old order changed yesterday, and it was ati ideal day for tho running of tho Cup: Thero was a very large attendance on tho course, and speculation oil tho machine and with the bookmakers was brisk.. The totalisator investments amounted, to £10,086, as against £11,799 for Cup day last year, and in addition to this some twenty bookmakers paid licenses for tho right tobot. Largo fields contested the different events, but in manycasos the racing was marrod by faulty starting. Mr. W. Homos, who acted in Mr. T. Cameron's stead at tho barrior, did not contral tho large fields"'very satisfactorily, and in the Cup raco tho tapos wore released when several of tho horses wero facing tho wrong way. An unfortunate incident occurred in connection with tho hurdlo raco. Mount Cook, tho winnor, was unable to draw the weight and tho race was awarded to Whatakura, while Cyrus was placed second. King Post, who finishod third in the provious race, also failed on returning to the scales, and Yosami was awarded third position. "After the hurdlo race, tho totalisator officials, through , some unfortunate mistake, commenced to' pay out on Mount. Cook and Whatakura, Some backcrs of tho former got paid in error, but those backers of Whatakura, who collected early, .'only received a third of tho'amount to which they were entitled, and their tickets being surrendered they have no proof of further claim. In the samo raco last year there was a good deal of trouble over the dividend of Bonheyr. Tho totalisator officials overpaid clients at the start, and afterwards altered tho dividend; and underpaid numerous others boforo the public the position. Such mismanagement is not by any moans A good advertisement for tb'e club. Tho principal evont of the day was won by Wailetho (Lotho— Wairoa). Sho-is owned and trained by F. •Higgott, of Trentham. Other Trentham horses to succeed at tho meeting wore Sir Frisco and Iranui, whilo Penates, from the Hutt, and Taitoko, from Porirua, also got on the winning list. Tho following aro tho dotailed results:—
