Doiine, dio have been appointed Government Cqmaiissioners in conncction with tho reception to be accorded to tho ■ visiting American fleet,' arrived. in Auckland this morning. Thoy will " havo a consultation with tho Governor to-morrow morning,, and a. conference .will also take place between the commissioners aud hi? Worship the Mavol (Mr. A.. M. Myers). The details of the Government's schemo will not bo divulged until they havo been discussed with his Excellency and Mr. Myers. .The conference ,_of Mayors and chairmen of tho local bodies to allocate the cost of entertaining the fleet will be held,on Friday.
THE "WEATHER PROSPECTS. . (by XELEGP.APH.—SrECIAL CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, June 3. In discussing tho weather prospccts in connection with tho visit of tlio American ileet the "Herald" says:—The Reception. Committee would .do well to keep in mind ■ the fact that July and August arc, on tho wholo, the rainiest months of the year in Auckland, as all old residents of Auckland know. Tho winter in Auckland does not consist so much of downright rainy days as of a very largo number of days on which Vain comes in tho shape of frequent showers. Tho American fleet is timed to be in Auckland from August 0 to 15, and the general character of tho weather for the month of August Auckland mav be gathered from tho following figures supplied by Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, Government Meteorologist for Auckland: In Au»ust Inst year rain foil on 25 days out of tho"3l,'tho/total amount being'6.44in.,jio /ess than 1.55 in. falling in ono day. Tho August of 1906 was an unusually dry month. Eain fell on 11 days, and the total ifal arnouited only to 1.76 in. In 1905 ram foil on Jo days in August, the total fall being y OS. This also is under the avorago. Eighteen days out of tbe 1904 August wore wet, and tho" total fall was 3.57 in. August, 1903, hail 20 wet days, and a total rainfall of 3.?>7in. Tho greatest rainfall evci' recorded in August was in 1870, when the largo amount of IO.SCin. v;as registered. Tho avorfail computed for a period of 41 • /cars >3 ■;abor.t 4Jin.
