THE HOLIDAY.
•Wollragtonians had good causo to congratulate'themselves yesterday when they were fortunate 'enough to get a perfect day for tho Princo of Wales's Birthday. Thoy were prompt in taking advantage of it, and by eleven o'clock the main streets were practically deserted, and most of . the shops were closed. ' ' • -• Tho Otaki races attracted a laTgo nuinber of people, something over a thousand leaving for that place during tho -morning.' Largo numbers also left for Plimmerton and Paekakariki, and even as far as<Palmerston North. Tho Govornmont lino was. also vory well patronised. About 800 persons woro booked to stations between Te Aro and Lower Hutt, 250 to Uppor Hutt, and about 170 left to go over the Rimutaka incline.' The traffic was a slight increase over last yoar's,_but it was nothing oxceptional. People did not leave tho city in very.largo numbers, as it is rather late in tho season for picnics. ' Very largo crowds left on. harbour excursions in tho Ferry Company's steamers. Tho principal'attraction was Day's Bay, whero two .hockey matches were- in progress, and various side-shows woro working. Tho hockey matches wero thus favoured with a largo number of spectators, which' is not usually tho case at Day's Bay. Tho Hutt Valley Coursing Club's meeting at Trentham was a considerable attraction. The event of tho evening was the opening |of tho now Garrison Hall. Largo crowds turned out, and followed the Volunteors round the streets, and as many as could possibly .squeeze themselves into tne building did so. Tliero were very largo attendances at tho Opera Houso (" Prisoner of Zenda"), Theatro Royal, Olympia Skating Rink, and Mr. Maughau Barnett's organ recita-l at tho Town Hall.
