THE WOMAN IN THE CAR.
Tho happy motorist is very well equipped this'spring (says''an'English writer). For her thero- are any number of new designs in handsome coatfc, and, sinco much elaboration is ' fashionablo in that direction now, tho, woman of most ambitious aspirations can suit herself. Camel is tho modish colour, and tho most 'practical'for the-open car, because of its likeness to ,tho dust of the road, and upon cloth "of that "tint,' Egyptian" embroideries soem only-natural. Tho bulk of the decoration is expended upon tho wide shoulderstraps that , are , continued , down' tho sleeves and" the'pretence of a collar, for I should explain'that the latest editions of the cloak have no collars at all, but aro ornamented where the collar 1 usod to be in the shape of a very shallow one. The cuffs of the very big' sleeves come in for their share of embroidery, and there are short bauds beneath the throat, liko thoso worn by barristers, _of an alien colour altogether, such as flaming nasturtium or, Athenian blue, quito an audacious contrast, but uncommonly'fascinating. I like tho utilitarian spirit that abandons all endeavour to embellish the lower part of a motor-coat, and instead slashes it up in .tags liko an old-world leather doubtlet. Of a. very real help, too, considering how'cold : tho weather may be,"are the qiiiltod linings and the, .double-breasted fronts,, hidden from 'sight, but infinitely cosy; The motor-veil that js attached to tho straw turban is" becoming do rig'ueur. It is purchasable in many forms, and as a rnlo is provided with an abundant covering 'for tho back of the head,' and' a drapery that' may bo worn down or up. ; The big rosottes that are bunched, at'one side or above each ear (the former mode is tho new one) are fixed in their place by means of pins that aro only a pretence, though tho huge jet and tortoiseshell heads resemblo thoso of pins. '•' \ • Long hatpins are a menace .'in the car, and so instead of them largo safety brooches aro preferred. Those of chased gold and others set pave aro beautiful and in groat demand among the elegantes of tho world of fashion. Still, the pin-heads remain, simply as a trimming. . ' Reindeer gloves with strapped wrists are more'useful than anj other kind;'and quito the most comfortable footgear there is aro good shoes with reindeer gaiters. Need i say these should match the cloak in colour, though tho. gloves may present, a contrast?
