At a meeting of tho Auckland Licensing Committee this afternoon, a letter was read by; tho Chairman, from Mr. H. Leckie, giv- ' ing the results of a census .t.ikeu «>y tho Young Men's No-License-League, respiting 30 city hotels watclied on Saturday, April ' 25, between 8 and 10 p.m.,' showing-that during tho hours in question 10,230 persons were seen to leavo the hotels,. 969*2 of these being: men, of whom'7s per cent, were y&UL'g men, 456 women, and 86 children. The' number of persons set down as seen 'decidedly intoxicated" during this period was 204, lh« greater proportion being young men. the Visit of the u.s. fleet. The final arrangements'in connection with' tho Local Industries Week " (Juno 4to 10) were made -at the moeting of , the' CanterburyIndustrial Association last evening. The 'report; of tho committee in regard, to the exhibition. stated that 33 . manufacturers wero exhibiting in 31 shop-windows which had been ~ allotted them, and 53 firms were making . independent exhibitions, of their goods.' At a meeting to-night of the City Schools Committee it was pointed out that in 1903 '• there; were 2482 certificated, and 7 546 -uncertificated teachers,- and, in 1906, 2418 ,and 243 respectively, showing a'large decrease in tho number of those certificated. -Other matters that came, in for some criticism; were tb'o growing paucity of male teachers, and tha unsatisfactory condition of tho If. was decided to voice an appeal in tho matter' to-tho Education Board. ............
