RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION FORMED. .Eight residents ofj. Island Bay district responded to' an' invitatftny from Mr. G. H.' Baylis, to attend at the Island Bay School,, for the purpose of discussing matters appertaining to 'tho welfare of the ; district. \Mr. Baylis was voted to-the chair, and in opening tlio proceedings explained that the rather meagre gathering was due to the somewhat sudden announcement, of the fact that a mooting was to bo held, and a number of residents who might otherwise have attended ' were, therefore, prevented from doing so by prior engagements. His action in calling tho meetinghad been inspired uy the announcement that the City Estimates were to be brought down at the Council meeting on Thursday "evening, sooner than liehad anticipated. v - That being so, > the present was an opportune timo for a leview of certain matters- concerning their own district—roads, lighting, .culverts, etc.—and for", waiting upon Council -in ordor to urge upon that body the. performance oE ■certain undertakings essential to the welfare of the district. , ,Qn the motion of Mr. Herron, it was de'cided to form a Ratepayers' Association. The • Chairman observed that he knew of five gentlemen who were prepared to finauce tho inauguration expenses or such all AssoIt was. further decified that thoso ( prosent should be appointed a deputation to wait upon the City Council at its meeting on Thursday, in order to urgo the performance of certain works. Tho most urgent necessity appeared to bo tho culvert, which, when completed, was to solve the surface water problem.; Mr. Armit moved that tho deputation urge that that portion of the sum of £7500, promised to a previous deputation for the construction of the culvert, bo allocated. This was seconded by Mr. Galo. ■ Mr. Wills 'referred to the unsatisfactory condition'of tho footpaths! 'In some cases these' woro so lijul that' the attendance of the children-at the local school was affected. It was decided " that the doputation bring this question before the Council.. , It was arranged that the mooting bo adiournod until next Friday week, at 8 p.m., when tho roport of the deputation to tho City Council will bo'considered.
