LITTLE ECONOMIES THAT RAISED £6800. . ./v,^ ■The British National Women's Social and Political Union has issued a report on. the recent self-denial ' week, during which { more than £6800,.-was contributed to the tunas or the "Union.? . ■'■ v ■ Mrs. Pethick Lawrence, who signs the report, says; that nearly all the contributions wore small amounts, andsshe quotes several typical-instances.of self-denial to raise money for tho : suffragist! cause. The following aro some of them:— . . . Denial of summer outht. . Savings : from housekeeping expenses. Three-quarters of a day's pay. A whole week's allowance. . Going without butter and meat. Fasting. From dress allowance. Walking to business and saving omnibus A weok's-cariiings as school mistress. A day's needlework. Two dinners. ■ ' . " Going without cocoa and mule. . "{Theatres; entertainments,-and social eniovments," says • Mrs. Pethick Lawrence "wero given up by-many, not only for oni week, but for the six weeks of the imprison ment of our friends. • • " One lady in tho West End was so movei by tho sight of Mrs. Pankhurst's arrest tha she made up her mind to let her houso n • the West End and sent a cheque for th rent—£2so. She afterwards extended thi contribution to a promisp of £1000 a yea until women , win tne vote. This sum reprc sents more than half her income.
