'HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL. • A special meeting (if the Lower Hutt' Borough Council was hold; last evening. The Mayor (Mr. T. A. Pqterkin) was in the chair, and there, were also'present: Crs. Baldwin, Ross, Hughes, Wildsmitli, Hodgins, O'Sullivan, "Ward,.- and Russell;.' "■■■■, The; first f business "was to. pass a special order referring to; : the . re-naming of the borough'' A. ..notice' of motion had ,beeii ; [jiven ;at, the proyious' meeting by Or. O'Sulhvan that that-'portion'of White's Lino West bo : known as,, Union . Street.; This amendment to the'scheme,' on a show of hands, was declared carried,.'and the special order as amended: was.;,passed. Application was "made by Captain'Ross, of the' Hutt Valley' Rifles,, for .the use of tho Recreation, Ground for,a.football match between; the'.Hlitt'-Rifles and the Johnsonvillo ,Rifles. The irequost,was.granted.:; . The Council, then went into' committee on the 'estimates for'the, coming year. 7 Despite the cold weather- and the muddy streets 'a large and, interested, assemblage gathered, on-; Saturday night to hear, the NoLicense speakers'on their fortnightly visit to tho boroughs • The speakers- fluently- explained their cause, but their, contentions' were not made-public without a large amount of interruption from some, very evident opponents .teethe, 'proposed,;change, and at tames tho remark's wore iarf from polite'. The crowd was as'large, as has been: seen.here for some time, and at one. time caused trouble through blocking the traffic. _ After tho conveners of the meeting had finished, " the- other side " were invited to air their eloquence, and two or throe essayed: the <jtask of answering the arguments with varying degrees of success. Tho interest taken'in tho question appears to increase .with toch meeting, arid there will evidently, be great efforts made on both sides to score every available vote. An' escapee from Porirua Mental Asylum was I ,found on" Saturday, and taken in charge by the police. In-tho evening he was taken into Wellington. '
