FIRE AT HARROW SCHOOL.
. , A HOUSE:BURNT DOWN. A serious fire occurred on tho. night- of 'April 3;' at. "Stogdon's House," one of the buildings of Harrow - School. The house was practically destroyed, 1 But'no one' was' injured, and admirable' discipline was shown by masters and bovs. ' ' The outbreak occurred a few minutes before nine' o'clock,; on the, top; portion of Mr.. Somervell's: house,' which is widely known as "Stogdon's House.'.'' At'the time the whole school wore present in; the speech room, where a 1 lecture was being delivered; ,t" On leaving; Mr. 5 Somervell was informed that his house was alight. Perfect order was maintained, by the boys, ' arid Mr. Somervell called over tho roll.' Tlie.master and boya quietly, walked up the street'to' the house; and by the time' they arrived there the building was : blazing furiously. Tho house, : which ■is owned by. Mr. Stogdon ; ' one of the seniorclassical masters, is a building of four stones and contains from 45 to 50 roomsj and accommodates some forty boys in addition to the household'ai\d servants. v . The outbreak, it appears, was discovered by the butler, who'at once raised the. alarm, and tho Harrow Fire Brigade were quickly on the spot. It. was at once seen that a sorioua conflagration/was threatened, and the Wealdstone and Wembley brigades wero summoned. Fortunately, there was only one boy in the house at the time. Largo crowds wero attracted by. tho glare, and thero was a strong force of, police , present. , • ': " . .Mr. Somervell's house, consisting of throe stories and basement Was destroyed.>.; The, name-board of the house, which is of considcrablo historic value was destroyed, and .many cups and trophies belonging to tho housei were consumed in. the flamos;
