RAILWAY SERVANTS' DEMANDS.
——__ MEETING AT AUCKLAND. (BY IELEOnAI'II—rBESB ABSOOIATION.) Auckland, Jutio.l. Tho president and general' secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (Messrs. A. ,\V. Veitch and M. J. Mack respectively) were entertained by the Aueklaud branch at a smoke concert .on Saturday evening. : Mr; Veitch, in acknowledging the hearty welcome extended to the visitors, said that they had been instructed by the council to visit the various branches. Proposals'which the council had in hand for general improvement in the conditions of the service were submitted to the Minister' in January last, and were practically all refused. , They requested another interview, as in the first ono they had not had time to put the whole of their requirements properly before the Minister, but they were met with a flat refusal. What the council now proposed was to place their, demands by circular " among the members of Parliament and of the different branches of the Society., These demands included,, among other things, a general, increase in wa«es, owing to ( increased cost of living;, a universal forty-eight hours a week, as prevailed ;in.other'branches' of industry; full civil and political rights; and better facilities for "promotion . from one grado to anothor. He submitted that all theso things wore theirs by right, and should be given. V -
