HER.RTATJNGA BOATING CLUB SOCIAL. The smoke concert of the Herotaunga Boating was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday ovening. Mr. D. Keir, oommodoro v of tlio Club, presided, and said ho hoped'that all wouldt enjoy themselves at this, tlio first,, smoke concert; of-the' Club. A.'woll-arranged programme of toasts) songs, and recitations was' then commenced. - "The Port Nicholson Yacht Club " was proposed by the Commodore., Mr. .Holmes, secretary' of.-tho Port Nicholson Club, in rising to respond to: tlio, toast, said.,' that though tho- two .clubs : -h'acl<' not met many tinies in contests, ho trusted that his Club would hare more racing on the programme m future that would bring tho two clubs closer together. '.. Mr. Wilford then proposed "Our Neighbours, tho, Potono. -Navals andßowing .Club." The Potono Navals, ho said, had ; put up a record in shooting which could 'not be beaten in England, Gormany,' or any other country. Mi - . Cruickshanks, ing on behalf of the Navals, said their success was due to tho system. Thoy ; would bo pleased if members of the Boating Club would join them, as some of their best guns were lying idle for want of men. Mr. Moore reon behalf of tho Rowing Club, and said that the Club always wished' to work with others, and especially with tho Horetaunga Boating Club. ] Mr. Holmes, of the Port Nicholson Sailing Club, in rising, to propose tho health of the Heretaungii Club, said ho wished to bring ,before them tlio need of a boat harbour. Mr. M'Donald, secretary of the Club,in responso, said that what Potono wanted was a reclamation 'schemo and a boat harbour. ? •' . v Mr. Wilford, as Chairman of Wellington Harbour Board, while not being vablo to pledge anything on behalf of its mombars, said. that, tho. Board had. constructed a boat' harbour 'in ' Wellington: which had cost £20,000, without including tlio; cost of ombankmont, and all they got by.; way nf interestMin ■ return i was £93 a , year, but if Mr,. M'Doiiald was, prepared tq!say: ; that his Club would guara'ntco the interest for a boat harbour' at Potono" tlio Board would then consider the matter. Mr. Wilford then stated: that 'ho would givo a five-guinea trophy for competition in tlio Horetaunga. Club, .races. .. .... .. ' Mr. Wilford, on hehnlf of the' Club, then presented Mr. Keir with a gold medal for winning three races, tile latter suitably replying. Mr. Keir then proposed "Our Patron,, Mr. Wilford," and Mr. Wilford, in responding, said ho always found it easier to spoak ■ well 1 of- other people'than to say anything about 'himself. ■ * Mr. Beddingfield then proposed "The Press;''.: and.
