One hundred and fifty men woro killed or wounded. The Governor's residence is blockaded, and the troops aro besieged in their barracks. . Tho Porto insists upon the recall of the Greek Consul. 1 BRITAIN A GUARANTEE POWER. . Samos, an island off tho const of Asia Minor, originally belonging to the lonian Confederation,. passed into the hands of Turkey, and in 1821 v.-as one. of the first to plunge into tho "War of Independence. Self-government was granted to tho island in 1832. Though a self-governing principality, Samos is under the suzerainty of Turkey, and is administered by a prince of the ,Sultan's nomination, assisted by four elective Senators'.. ' Tho Powers who guarantee tho independence of Samos, and whose business it will bo to deal with Tnrkey's breach of the treaty in sending troops, aro France,- Great Britain, and Russia. The. 1 treaty is dated December 11, 1832. In 1902 the lonian population of Samos was 53,424, arid there were 1419 foreigners, including 1325 Greeks. It is probably' the usual story of the Gr'oeks coming into conflict with Tnrkish officialdom. The religion is tho Greek Orthodox. / The most active- industries are the manufacture of wine, oil;-cigarettes, leather, and brandy. Samos is known to contain deposits of various minerals, including antimony,- .sil-ver-lead, manganese, copper, zinc, arid inarble, but there is little or no mining. The area of the island is 180 square' miles.
