CONFERRING OF DEGREES. .j NOISY UNDERGRADUATES REPROVED, j . (BY TELBBEAPD—mESB ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, May 29. The annual meeting for .the conferring, of degrees' and tho presentation of diplomas in connection with the Auckland University College district was held this afternoon, tho Chancellor of the University (Sir Robert Stout) presiding. 1 His Excellency the Governor, who made a • short speech, spoke of tho need of new University buildings at Auckland, and said that [j if the residents showed a willingness to assist > in providing tho oost the Government would : no doubt do its share in tho matter. i, The Hon. Geo. Fowlds, Minister for Edui cation, spoko of tho increased attention now ' given educational matters in the Dominion, • and the importance that our University training was likely to play , to the futuro selection of youths for commercial pursuits. Mr. Aldridge, President of the Students' Association,-, ■ spoko on behalf of the undergraduates.- He dwelt on the need for'a new college at Auckland, and deplored the lack of. interest exhibited by Aucklanders in regard to University matters. Mr. J. W. Joynt, Registrar of tho Univer- ' sity, also spoko briefly, and commented on 1 tho fact that the first student to take tho r newly-created degree of Bachelor of Com- ? merce was Mr. Maxwell Walker, of Auckland. 1 Tho undergraduates subjected tho speakers to considerable interruptions, and wero s twice reproved _ by tho Chancellor, who 0 threatened'to adjourn the meeting if they did 0 not desist. 3. . .
