The list of cases sot down.for hearing at the civil sittings of the Auckland Supremo Court, which will be opened on Monday next, is the longest that has been presented for some years past. The ordinary civil actions number 25, and the amount involved in tho various .claims totals over £12,000. There aro eighteen suits under tho Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act, 13 of these being petitions for dissolution of marriago. . RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP. ' Auckland, May 28. No nominations were received for tho Research Scholarship offered to Auckland, the feeling evidently being that sufficient inducement is not offered. AN INQUEST. \ Christchurch, May 28. At the inquest hold to-night touching thei doath of an old man named William Bachelor, who foil off a tramcar on Tuesday night and sustained injuries, from which ho died, a verdict was returned that the injuries were . caused by alighting from a car while in mo .. tion. - "THE COMING OF THE MAORI." ATTEMPTED HOTEL BURGLARY. 1 , Wairoa, May 28. 1 There was an attempted - burglary at Storoy's Hotel at half-past two this morning. The burglar extracted a pane of glass in the private office, but tho noise of falling glasa woke the landlord. The burglar, however, got away. Nothing was taken except a pair of boots. MISSING SCOW ARRIVES! Auckland, May 28. The overdue scow Maroro has arrived at Raglan from Wanganui. She reports that she was delayed by very light winds. DROWNED." ■ : Invercargill, May 28. A man named John Cotter, a fisherman, , was drowned at Ruapuke Island on Tuesday, , and the body was brought over to the Bluff > to-night. No details are available. ' ; A SERIOUSXJHARGE. ' . , Dunedin,. May 27. At the Police Court this morning, before Mr. C.- C. Graham, S.M., Robert Wells (a < rag, bone, and bottle collector, of South • Dunedin) appeared to answer four charges , of receiving stolen property, four boilers . valued at about 10s.. each. Chief Detectivoi Herbert said accused had counselled twoi * young children to steal these boilers. The . children stole the boilers, and were paid ridi- : culously low prices for them. Tho,whole circumstances were of such a serious nature - that tho matter' should be sent to the higher Co\irt. Accused was committed to the .Supreme Court for trial, His Worship saying that tho offence was one of the most serious that a person could bo charged with. Bail was fixed at accused in £100 and a surety in . a similar amount, or two sureties of £5(1 ' each. ' , ' TOWED OFF. ' , • ' Bluff, May 28. •When leaving Bluff Harbour forTimaru the Wairuna,went aground on the William Davy Bank at half ebb tide. Owing to the state of the tide the towage operations , by the tug were of no avail. Invercargill, May 28. The 's.s. Wairuna was towed off the TSank on to-night's tide, and continued her voyage. ' ~ YACHTS FOR NAVY PURPOSES. Eltham, May 27. Regarding .the cable yesterday from Molbourno re yachts, stating that Captain Whitnoy had a promise from Sir Joseph Ward of favourable consideration of a request for ■ £500, tho Prime Minister says he has no ' communication on tho matter, TENDERS FOR WHARF WORKS. ■ Auckland, May 27. Mr. H. Heather referred at tho meeting -■ of the Harbour Board to tho system or:■ calling for tenders in England for iron and , steel for wharf works. Ho contended that local merchants and agents should have, a chance afforded to tender, as it was possible that they would be ablo. to , quote as cheaply as the firms in London. The Chairman said that the Board had saved a largo amount by ordering from London, as when tenders were called in Auckland only ono was sent in, and there was no competition. Next month, however, lie intended to propose that tenders bo invited locally for such supplies, and perhaps f now there would be better competition.
