Britishers, at Palmerston, or July B.' Captain Hope-Johnstone and Mr. Muschamp Earle, two English tourists, decided in December last, to inspect New Zealand's scenery, travelling in a caravan. In this uniquo conveyance they toured from Auckland through tho country as far as Tarawera. Two months' fishing and shooting were experienced at Rlotorua and Okere, anc then,owing to the lateness of the season and the bad condition of the roads, the caravan was discarded for a 43 horse-power automobile. Tho two gentlemen intend to toui the South Island, if possible, beforo tliej leave tho Dominion in July next for Tahiti, thenco proceeding to China, Manchuria, Japan, and across to England, via Canada. Captain Hope-Johnstono informed a Dominion representative that he had already travelled considerably in America, Europe, India, and Australia, and he served two years |in tho war in South Africa. Mr. Muschamp Earle is a cousin of Mr. Edwin Bainbridgo, the English tourist who was killed at Wairoa during the Tarawera eruption, ami whoso monumont is one of the objccts of interest in the Rotorua district. Captain Hope-Jolmstone states that ho has been most hospitably treated during his stay in Now Zoaland, a period now extending. to eighteen months. He thinks New Zealand is a very fine country, but rather over-done from a poliH-il point of view,
Mr. J. M. Gouldsmith, of Gißborno, is spending a few days in Wellington. Sir. Peter Dalrymple has been appointed Assistant Land Registrar at Invercargill. Dr. Makgill, Government Bacteriologist, lias left for Canterbury on a Departmental visit. Dr. Pomarc, Health Officer to the Maoris, is visiting the Taranaki district. He will bo absent about a week. Scholefield, of Wellington, has been appointed London correspondent to an association of Now Zealand papers, in euo cession to the lato Mr. C. Rous-Marten. Messrs. Charles Mitchell, Geo. B. Ashley, and Geo. Wright are gazetted representatives of the counties of Waipawa, Waipukurau, and Dannevirke on the Eawko's Bay and Waipawa United Charitablo Aid Board. . Drs. S. W. C. Warneford (Hokianga), Elizabeth H. B. Macdonald (Wellington), Geo. P. Baldwin (Jit. Grey'), F. Collins (Charleston), and K. F. Gordon (Mercury Bay) have been appointed public vaccinators. Mr. Leo Buekeridgo, teacher of voice production, leaves Wellington to-day for Nelson, where, on Tuesday next, he is to be married to Miss Ethel Edwards, daughter of Mr.' Henry Edwards, of that town.
