Fowlds, . Minister for Education, this afternoon to protest against tho cadet camp system. r Mr. W. .Hill, of the Grafton School, said that ijhoyf were not onnosod to the cadet movement,;but only to,the camp, and in that , lie was speaking for all the masters of the : eity and suburbs with tho exception of two It was impossible to.: carry out tho schooi work with its, present crowded syllabus if such camps were to bo introduced, and in the latter case somotliing would havo to give way. ' Other poachers spoke in the same'strain. Mr. Fowlds said that as hoad of tho Department he had euito an open mind as to the utility and . wisdom of the carans. He was certain that unless, tho officers" of the cadet companies wore themselves wholeheartedly in favour of the camns the latter could not . but, be . harmful. (Hear, hear.) , Tho Department simply assented" to the camps when the officers of tho different battalions : wanted them, arid when there was a feeling amongst tho officers that it would bo desirable. The Department did not push matters at all. Ho placed a high % value on tho cadet movement generally, but as regards, its'educational value lie thought there was always a disposition to run this too much, into, the 'lines of military education. He desired tho cadets to remain under the control of the schools. Ho would look with disapproval on an attempt to control the cadets from outside.
