As the French President, M. Fallieres, crossed tho channel in the armoured cruiser Leon Gambetta a flotilla of British destroyers mot and escorted him to a point off Shakespeare Cliff, where the garlanded fleet lay. Tlio Leon Gambetta steamed between tho lines of tho British warships, receiving a salute, tho bands playing "The Marseillaise," and blue-jackets chcering. The President was greatly pleased with tho cordiality of his welcome at Dover, and with the brilliant reception at Victoria Railway Station, London. Here King Edward warmly greeted M. Fallieres, accompanying him to St. James's Palace, wherd lib is residing. , Tho crowds woro enthusiastic, and tho decorations in Grosvenor Place, Piccadilly, and St. James Street were magnificent. STATE BANQUET. PERMANENCE OF ANGLO-FRENCH ' CORDIALITY. (Rec. May 27, 0.20 a.m.) London, May 26. After making ceremonial calls on King Edward and the Princo of Wales, M. Fallieres attended a State banquet at Buckingham Palace. . King, Edward said that he and the Queen were, enchanted with the welcome that the peoplo of, Great-Britain had accorded, their guest, and hoped that the Entente would beeomo permanent becauso it was necessary to ' tlio welfare and prosperity of tho two nations and for the maintenance of peace, which mado for tho happiiieGS of tho whole world. M. Fallieres replied that ho was much touched by- the splendour and friendliness of tho reception which His Majesty tho King and the City of London liad accorded to him. Ho addod: " This visit, and His Majesty tho King's frequent sojourns in Franco - havo confirmed tho cordial understanding between the two countries, . which lam well convinced tlio future will render closer for their common good, and for the maintenance of the peace of tho world." M. Fallieres further said that it was most agreeable to him to visit. the Franco-British Exhibition in company with tho King and to admire the geriius of the two peoples. He drank to the Royal Family, to tho greatness of the United Kingdopi, and to the development, of the auspicious friendship uniting the two-nations.' King Edward decorated M. Fallieres with tho Grand Chain of. tho Victorian Order. M. Fallieres' conferred tho Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour on Princo Arthur of Connaught (Aide-de-;Cafnp .to tho King) and on Lord Charles Beresford (Commander of the Channel Squadron). ENTHUSIASTIC SEND-OFF IN FRANCE. Paris, May 25. There was great enthusiasm iri; connection with tho departure of MM; Fallieres (President) arid Pichon (Minister for Foreign Affairs) from Paris on their visit to England. They also received an ovation at Boulogne.
