The death has occurred of Joseph Becalick, known in tho village of Woolt'ardiswort-hy West, North Devon, for the i past twenty years as " tho man who., lives' in ' the chimney." ' v.".... " : . Begimiing lifo as a farm hand, lie was educated at a night, school under' the then vicar of tho parisli, and was later appointed rato collector, for the. district. In addition ho;hold a small farm, Hero he . lived witli two servants, j'never having ■' married,' .when' the accident Mmurrcd which, led to. his \strange existence. Over twenty , years ago, whilo on 0110 of his periodical visits,to Bideford Market, his house wae burned to. the ground;! Ono wall, however, was intact', supported apparently by , an'oldfashioned cliimney,'at the, base of which was a fireplace, an aperture about sft. square. , Into this, cavity, amid the ruin of his house,, tho poor mail crept and lay down to sleep. And hero for more ".than twenty years he has lived alone through storm and sunshine,, wind and snow. A deal,box was his couch, and he cooked his.food at a log fire.
