VICTORIAN DIVORCE SCANDAL
'■ Mr. Justico Hood, of Victoria, in granting a decree nisi in a divorce case the other day, said:—Thoso cases of divorco for desertion aro so common that it is time tlio attention of tho Legislature was called to them. In many cases there can bo 110 doubt there is collusion, and tlio Legislature ought now either to make divorce easier than it is, or to take a step backward. This class of caso at present constitutes a public scandal, and tho scandal can only be stopped, either by removing tho bar to divorce which collusion creates, thus taking the burden off the Court of discovering whether it exists, or else by making desertion a' criminal olfence. In this caso tlio man got tired of his wife, and left her. Then he came back and tried to get his wife to support him, and finally went away altogether. In tlio present state of- the law there is a Imrden on the Court to crossexamine tho petitioner to see if there is collusion, .though tlio Court has not the materials before it 011 which to decide. 111 addition, the prcseut system almost compels peoplo who havo been guilty of collusion to commit perjury.
