LUNATIC. ON A ROOF.
■An escaped lunatic, named Hardy,' sit' Portsmouth 011 April 9 was pursued : for two miles from the borough asylum, and climbed to the roof of a bouse. Gentler means failing, the fire brigado was called out, and the hose turned on him. Still the lunatic refused to descend, and retaliated by stripping the roof and throwing slates at tlio liremen. Ho was finally left for the night on the housetop. ' . When a ladder was next morning placed in position, Hardy stood at the top with a piceo of timber, and threatened anyone who should come up. A crowd of about 3000 people collected to watch the struggle. When Hardy at last camo down tlio ladder there was a violent struggle with tho asylum attendants and police before he was scoured.
