News from the East states 1 that natives ambushed a Dutch patrol at Klungkung, Island of Bali, killed an officer and four men, and wounded twelve. •. The attack is attributed to repression of the opium traffic!' A Dutch warship subsequently'bombarded Klungkung. ; , INTERMITTENT REBELLION. Bali, or Little Java, an island 70 mils long and 35 miles broad, lying cast of Java, is "one of the Dutch East Indies. For years the natives of ono or other ol' these islands have been intermittently troublesomo, and the Dutch never'seem to stamp the fires of native hostility right out. In. the. island of Sumb'awa last February; in nil engagement, tho Dutch lost one 'European officer and a soldier, and four native soldiers, killed; llirco native soldiers wero wounded. Tho enemy were reported to havo lost 05' men killed, including the leaders of the rebellion. Bali and Lonibok islands are estimated to contain in thomselves a population of 1,011,096/ In tho . wholo of tho Dutch East. Indies tboro are, according to estimato, 31,000,000 natives and 75,000 Europeans. The administration is in the bauds of a Govornor-General, nominated by tho Queen of the Netherlands, and ho is assistod by a Council, whose powers are, partly legislative, partly' advisory. Undor tlio Governor-General, tho administration ,is carried on by Residents and subordinate officers. The army, which .is purely colonial, numbers about 14,500 Europeans and 23,000 natives. .Tho cost of tho navy is borne partly by the colony and partly by tho Government of the Netherlands.
