Edward 'R'alsh, for forgery and uttering at Hamilton, .was sentenced to two years' imprisonment; Katu Hohora, for perjury at Jfaeo, to two years; and Ngawati Slade, a young Maori, forgery and uttering, twelve months. Joseph Caltause, charged with assault and causing actual bodily harm at Gisborno, was recommended to probation, but . the Judgo was not prepared to adopt tho 1 recommendation, regarding the seriousness of the assault. Tlios. Fitzgerald, charged with arson, appeared in Court as if in a fit, in which state he had been for a considerable time. He was remanded till next session. .' . Karl HiUstrom received a sentence Of threo years'" imprisonment for theft of jnonoy entrusted to him to buy provisions for a sports meeting. Christchurch, May 19. The criminal sessions of the Supremo Court were _ continued to-day boforo Mr. Justice Denniston.
William Evans appeared upon a chargo of breaking into and entering tho dwellinghouse of William James Knox, at Winchmore, on April 1, 1908, and stealing £8 14s. 6d. Mr. liusscll said that ho would ask that the case should he allowed to stand over pending arrangements for trial by a jury not composed of men who had heard the evideirco in tho two previous charges on which the accused was convicted. His Honour granted tho application. Edmond Home pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with entering tho dwelling-house of Edmond Harris at Spreydon on March 13, 1908, with intent to commit a felony. His Honour said that the accused soomed to have deliberately embarked .on a criminal career, although he had had every chance as far as a man of his consitution could havo chances. Ho would bo sentenced to three years' . imprisonment. Thomas Sutherland was acquitted on a charge of stealing from the dwelling-house of Henry Acland Winslow a purso containing £9 10s. Henry , Arthur Devonshire, William Arthur Pringle, William Henry Thomas, and George Cannon, formerly firemen on the Papanui, denied charges of cargo broaching at Lyttolton between January 25 arid 27. Tlireo men had alroady pleaded guilty to the offence, and ono of thom testified that tho accused wero not implicated. The hearing had not concluded when the Court adjourned for tho day.
